HISTORY FILE:
'Am baile' is Gaelic for 'the village', which the nearby township of Habost was affectionately
called by its residents. Habost is one of the oldest inhabited
townships in northern Lewis and was traditionally the home of the 'Brieves' -
clan judges.
A document dated 1878 states: "The chief of the Clan Morrison, whose
dwelling was at Habost, Ness, was hereditary judge or brieve (Breitheamh)
of Lewis, and continued to hold the office till the beginning of the
seventeenth century."
An earlier record, quoted in the 1878 document, states: "The Brieve is
a kind of judge amongst the ilanders , who hath an absolute judicatorie,
vnto whose authoritie and censure they willinglie submitt themselves, when
he determineth any debateable question betuein partie and partie [sic]" |
