HISTORY FILE:
An Cambar is a small hill on the moor, about a 1.5 miles from Tom Gorm, that has been a landmark for generations of 'Nisich' who cut and harvested the area's abundant natural peat for domestic fuel.  During the 19th and early 20th centuries, crofting families (principally women and their children) seasonally migrated from their croft homes to spend the summer months at moorland shielings with their cattle, which grazed on abundant fresh grass and  heather while arable crops were grown on the richer croft lands back in the townships.  The name 'Cambar' from Gaelic means 'encampment' or 'resting place'.
